Five Tips when Choosing your Vacation Rental

February 18, 2011

More private and often more affordable than hotel rooms, vacation rentals are increasingly becoming the way to stay. The right vacation condo, cabin, or townhome can be the perfect start to an unforgettable vacation; often they come with more space, better amenities, and have more varied locations than you’d find if you were strictly looking at hotels.

Of course picking the right vacation home is the first step when you plan to travel. Here are a few simple things to keep in mind when you start planning your next vacation getaway:

Know your destination  Although you may be in town for the beaches or the ski slopes, most vacation locales have a wide range of off-the-beaten-path activities when you know the area. Check travel guides and speak with an expert so you can plan everything from zipline canopy tours to hot springs visits when you come to town.

Know what you need – Traveling with pets or small children? Need ski locker storage or resort shuttle access? Only choose a vacation rental that suits all of your needs. Be sure to check what amenities are offered with your rental property and double check that the location is to your liking before you commit to a week-long stay.

Keep an eye out for special rates and deals – Many vacation home suppliers will offer off-season specials to fill vacant properties. Shrewd travelers can save as much as 50% on their lodging costs or get special package deals that include free lift tickets, rental gear and more. Stretch your dollars so you can enjoy more of the fun stuff on your trip.

Always choose professionally managed – Professionally managed vacation properties offer more security and a better guarantee of quality. You want to be sure the vacation home you choose is professionally maintained and cared for so there are no unpleasant surprises when you walk in the door.

Consider trip insurance – When you’ve booked a trip six months in advance it’s entirely possible your plans may change down the road. Don’t let an unexpected illness, injury or job loss ruin your fun. If you have to cancel or postpone a trip, travel insurance can protect your investment and ensure you get the vacation you hoped for.
